Shami, 33, underwent Achilles tendon surgery in London. He may miss the upcoming IPL season and his participation in the T20 World Cup is uncertain.

Shami hasn’t played since India’s ODI World Cup final in November 2023. Despite carrying an injury during the tournament, he emerged as the highest wicket-taker.

He was initially part of India’s Test squad for the South Africa tour but was later withdrawn. In his absence, other bowlers have been given opportunities.

Shami’s last Test match was during the ICC World Test Championship final against Australia in June 2023.
